n South Africa, fire is one of the most unpredictable and destructive forces of nature, a reality that affects both our urban and rural landscapes. From our many high-rise office centres and factories to wildlands that are rich with fynbos, the risk of fire is everywhere. It is for this reason that fire fighting training is so important, not only for professional firefighters, but for any individuals who are responsible for safety at work, on-site, or in their communities.

At EMCARE, all our fire fighting training programs have been built to prepare our learners for the full spectrum of challenges found in SA. Regardless of whether you’re an employee who needs to learn about basic fire awareness, a safety representative managing a team, or even an aspiring firefighter who’s ready to be deployed to the front lines, at EMCARE, we offer a progressive range of courses to suit every level of skill and responsibility.

Every course we offer, from the Basic Fire Awareness course to the Fire Fighter II & Hazmat Operations, was designed to build readiness in the real world. With our hands-on drills, live fire simulations, and expert guidance from our accredited instructors, our learners graduate not only with certificates but also with the knowledge and confidence to act decisively when every second counts.

EMCARE Fire Fighting Training: Basic Fire Awareness (BFA)

Proper fire safety starts with awareness. Our Basic Fire Awareness Course (BFA) is the ideal entry point for any individual who seeks to understand the fundamentals of how fires behave and how to prevent them. This is a half-day course that introduces our learners to the science behind how fires start, spread, and how they can be contained, with a focus on knowledge that applies to all workplaces, from offices and warehouses and retail spaces.

The course also covers the fire triangle, ignition sources, and how to properly identify the different classes of fire. All participants learn how to correctly use basic extinguishing equipment, recognise potential hazards, and follow the proper evacuation procedures. It’s a great foundation for general staff members who might be the first to notice smoke, electrical faults, or fuel leaks before they can escalate into major emergency situations.

Beyond workplace safety and readiness, proper fire awareness also supports compliance. Here in South Africa, the Occupational Health and Safety Act requires employers to provide them with safe working conditions and adequate fire prevention measures, and this includes the presence of trained personnel (see the Department of Employment and Labour).

When your business enrols its employees in our BFA course, they take an essential step toward fulfilling these legal obligations, while also empowering their employees to respond confidently in early-stage fire emergencies. The BFA certification is valid for two years, after which a refresher course can be taken to maintain compliance and reinforce safety habits.

EMCARE Fire Fighting Training: Basic Fire Fighting / Fire Marshal Course (BFF)

For anyone seeking to go beyond awareness and take a leading role in on-site emergency situations, our Basic Fire Fighting / Fire Marshal Course (BFF) provides the next vital step. It’s a one-day course, which is also valid for two years, and equips individuals with both theoretical knowledge, and the practical confidence to control small-scale fires safely while also coordinating evacuation and response procedures.

All participants begin this course by revisiting the core fire science principles before moving on to hands-on training, which involves how to identify the correct extinguishers for each specific fire class, proper operation of hoses and hydrants, as well as using personal protective equipment (PPE)> All these drills are conducted in realistic, supervised settings so that every student can experience the heat, noise, and urgency of a genuine fire scenario, without compromising safety.

EMCARE Fire Fighting Training: Advanced Fire Fighting (AFF)

The next step course is our Advanced Fire Fighting training course (AFF) which is designed for industries and operations where fire risks are severe or complex. It’s also a two-day program that builds on the BFF course foundations, preparing learners to take on high-intensity fire situations in industrial plants, warehouse, refineries, and other high-risk sites.

Trainees get to take part in live fire drills using advanced equipment, learning to control flames fed by various fuel sources and to contain flashover scenarios under instructor supervision. The course has an emphasis on strategic fire suppression, including teamwork, communication under pressure, and the correct use of hydrants, hoses, and foam lines.

All participants also practice rescue and evacuation procedures, covering simulated low-visibility environments while using proper breathing apparatus techniques. These fully immersive scenarios help our learners with physical conditioning and mental resilience that is needed to remain calm, lead effectively and carry out safe operations during real emergencies.

EMCARE Fire Fighting Training: Fire Fighter I and II With Hazmat Modules

If you’re pursuing a career in emergency services, our Fire Fight I and II courses represent the highest level of fire fighting training. Both are accredited by SAESI and IFSAC, and these intensive programmes combine theoretical knowledge, physical conditioning, and live-fire simulations over the course of several weeks.

All participants learn to master complex fire behaviour, hazardous-materials handling, and search and rescue operations under the guidance of our experienced instructors. Also, all these modules align with the globally recognised benchmarks that are set by our National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), making sure that all our graduates are trained to internationally recognised standards. Once completed, all our cadets receive their certificate of competence, which confirms their ability to take command during industrial or structural fire emergencies.
