Fire Fighting Training: How You Can Prepare Yourself for the Worst!

Are you looking to make sure that you remain prepared and equipped for when practically any situational emergency strikes? EMCARE might just have you covered through our many different training courses, including but not limited to our widely applauded fire fighting training course, one that has already helped thousands of South Africans prevent themselves from being left unable to protect themselves and those around them in particularly heated situations. If safety and preparation for any situation seem at all interesting to you, then take only a few minutes to read this brief but informative guide, showing you why EMCARE has become South Africa's first choice in safety training!

An Introduction to EMCARE's Fire Fighting Training Courses

Being surrounded by a raging fire, whether it be due to some form of house fire or a burning car, can lead to anyone suffering from severe or even fatal injuries if unprepared and without the necessary knowledge of how to protect oneself, and if it is safer to sedate the fire in question or seek out shelter while waiting for firefighters to arrive at the scene. Without any form of training or background knowledge of fire fighting, there is a lot that is put at risk, both for yourself as well as the people and environment around you.

Throughout our 26 years of service within South Africa since starting in 1997, EMCARE has recognised this and has since begun to provide a number of different fire fighting training courses. Each of these training courses comes filled with its own content, skill levels, and durations. This is for the sole purpose of providing as many different South Africans with the chance to start their training without having to worry about feeling as if they are either being thrown in the deep end or rather being pandered to. Another benefit of EMCARE providing so many different courses is that learners have the option of starting out with zero knowledge of fire fighting with the Basic Fire Awareness Course (BFP), and then work their way up to becoming a fully trained and certified firefighter through EMCARE's Fire Fighter 2 SP & Hazmat Operations SP Course (FF2).

If you are wanting to take your safety training further than just keeping yourself and your family protected, and want to extend that protection to as many people as possible, then EMCARE's courses may still be perfect for you. This is because each of EMCARE's fire fighting training courses provide students with an A4 certificate upon completion, allowing students to then go on to enter the field as fully-fledged fire firefighters. These certificates are made official due to EMCARE having attained a number of highly respected accreditations and affiliations, which includes:

  • EduCert Certificate Solutions
  • Health and Welfare Sector Education and Training Authority (HWSETA)
  • Department of Employment and Labour South Africa (DOL)
  • Local Government Sector Education and Training Authority (LGSETA)
  • South Africa Qualifications Authority (SAQA)
  • Train Learn Develop (TLD) Trust
  • Independent Schools Association of Southern Africa (ISASA)
  • Construction Education and Training Authority (CETA)
  • South African Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (Saiosh)
  • Fire Fit

EmCare - Operating a Hose

After discovering that so many well-known and esteemed organisations have come together to support and provide official certificates to EMCARE and its learners, countless South Africans have come to choose this safety training institution as their first and only choice amongst the many options that are still available around the country today.

While these accreditations and certificates are why many people choose to come to EMCARE for their general safety and fire fighting training courses, people tend to stay for the staff and teachers that facilitate and conduct these courses. To help cement a smooth and thorough learning experience that sustains the highest of quality across all courses, EMCARE has made sure to employ none other than the best trainers in South Africa, each of whom are fully qualified in their field and have attained a Level 6 Intermediate Life Support Paramedic qualification or higher, while also each possessing an absolute minimum of 1000 hours of work experience within emergency services.

What allows EMCARE's facilitators to take their work experience and qualifications further than qualified trainers that can be found elsewhere are their attention to detail, commitment to safety as well as their ability to stay calm and encouraging even in the most intense of situations. EMCARE has received thousands of testimonials over the years, many of which have taken the opportunity to specifically mention how helpful and accommodating the staff and lecturers have been, and carry on to be, to each and every single student.

A Guide to All of EMCARE's Fire Fighting Training Courses

Now that you are a bit more acquainted with the quality that is on offer throughout EMCARE's fire fighting training courses, you may be a bit more interested to find out what is specifically featured within each course in particular before just simply enrolling yourself. If so, then this is already a great sign for your future as a firefighter, taking great care and consideration into each step moving forward in order to ensure the best outcome for yourself as well as those around you.

Basic Fire Awareness Course

Working our way up from the very first course that is made available to those that have no prior experience in fire fighting, EMCARE offers a Basic Fire Awareness Course (BFP). This fire fighting training course is specifically planned to help learners equip themselves with the necessary skills and information that is needed in order to successfully extinguish a home or office fire.

With a duration of only half a day's work, this course helps you to create a prepared and safe environment, prevent fires using a variety of firefighting equipment and newly learned skills while also building the confidence that is needed to tackle any small, but otherwise unexpected, emergency with care and without fear. Once learners have been able to complete the course, which goes over an Introduction to Fire and its Different Classes, the Burning Process amongst many other topics, they can then expect to be awarded with an A4 certificate that remains valid for the following 2 years.

Basic Fire Fighting Course

A step up from BFP we have the Basic Fire Fighting training course (BF1), which is designed to teach additional firefighting techniques to students, as well as how to sedate fires in a manner that is safe and efficient. While the previously mentioned BFP course only provides its learners with the bare essentials on how to spot and handle a fire, this course allows its learners to get a bit more hands-on in their approach to dealing with fires, teaching them how to go about their task safely as well as other incredibly essential techniques and information over the course of just a single day.

Once you have reached the end of this course, which covers topics that include but are not limited to Methods of Operation, Carbon Dioxide, Fire Prevention, Care and Maintenance of Fire Equipment, and more, you will then be awarded with an A4 certificate with a validity of 2 years.

Advanced Fire Fighting Course

In the Advanced Fire Fighting Course (AFF), the learning experience becomes far more robust as the course takes place over a 2-day period, allowing students to fully immerse themselves in an environment that is conducive to fire and safety training over an extended period of time. While the first day will see students cover a number of topics relating to Fire Prevention and Rescues in its many different forms, the second day will allow students to put their newfound knowledge to the test in a practical setting.

These portions of the course take place at a training location that is specifically designed to accommodate practical demonstrations in fire fighting. This is also where students are first introduced to the use of hand-operated fire fighting equipment, as well as their very own A4 certificate that remains valid for the following 2 years once completing the course.

Fire Fighter 1 SP and Hazmat Awareness SP Course

Those that enrol themselves into the Fire Fighter 1 SP and Hazmat Awareness SP (FF1) usually do so in order to pursue a professional career as a fully trained and qualified firefighter. This career course is also accompanied by a Hazmat Awareness training course within the same package, but can be tackled separately upon your request.

With this being one of EMCARE's lengthier courses, taking place over a period of 9 weeks, plenty of theoretical information and practical knowledge is handed down to students in a methodical and efficient manner to allow each and every skill to be retained to memory without students having to second guess themselves, especially while out in the field. This course covers a variety of detailed topics, ranging from Forcible Entry and the Use of Ground Ladders all the way to recognising and

Identifying Hazardous Materials too.

Fire Fighting 2 SP and Hazmat Operations SP Course

Building upon everything that was taught in the previous fire fighting training courses, the Fire Fighting 2 SP and Hazmat Operations (FF2) course takes place over an additional 7-week period and is seen as the most natural career move towards becoming a fully trained and qualified firefighter. While the previous course was accompanied by a Hazmat Awareness course, FF2 is instead accompanied by an improved and more densely packed Hazmat Operations course. Altogether, this entire course allows students to focus on a variety of new topics that range from Fire and Life Safety Initiatives to the Introduction to Hazardous Materials as well as Hazard and Risk Assessment too.

This is the final course that EMCARE provides to those seeking out a career as a firefighter, providing them with all the necessary skills and information needed in order to thrive and keep themselves as well as others as safe as can be while working in the field. Once having completed this course for yourself, you will then be equipped with a number of certificates that will allow you to prove your dedication and proficiency in fire safety to the world, and to those you wish to be employed by.
